Prolotherapy: A Patellar Tendonitis Treatment

Patellar tendonitis can be treated, and treated effectively!  Many times at Prolotherapy of Denver we are seeing people having great results in just 3 treatments.  patellar tendonitis is a mouthful, but some people know this condition as Jumpers Knee.  It is a painful condition that happens when the there is a lot os strain, or stress on your knee cap.  As a degenerative condition, many times people are told that there is nothing you can do to fix it, only slow it down.  That is not true.  Prolotherapy helps to heal the area and is an effective patellar tendonitis treatment.

What Is Jumper’s Knee?

Chondromalacia Patella

Jumper’s Knee is another name for Patellar Tendonitis.  It will also be referred to as patellar tendinosis.  It is a condition where the there is a lot of tension just below your knee cap.  It can also happen as a “repetitive use injury”.  That just means that you do the same movement over and over again, like in cycling or running.  It is always best to treat this early.  You may start to feel soreness, but it doesn’t hurt too bad.  Don’t Ignore it!  The sooner we treat it, the better results we have.  Once you have your Jumper’s Knee Treatment, we want to make sure that we eliminate the cause.  If this happens when running or other exercise, have someone check your form.  That way you can continue to have a long, healthy, pain free life!

Affordable Tendonitis Treatment

If you have been looking for Prolotherapy treatments, you probably noticed our price is significantly lower than other offices. I get many people asking, “Why are your prices so cheap?”. First, know that the price on our website is the total price you pay. We do not charge per injection, and we do not add an office visit or other fees. Many times when treating Patellar tendonitis, we will do 2 injections just under the knee cap and 3 or 4 around the knee to support overall joint health. That is all considered 1 treatment. If we are doing both knees, please contact us first as we will need to add time to the appointment and there will be an additional charge for the second area. Dr. Scott Richardson DAOM not only performs prolotherapy injections, he is also a nationally credentialed continuing education provider. He teaches other health care providers how to do prolotherapy. He has the experience and the knowledge to get great results. We do our best to keep the cost of prolotherapy low so more people can have access to it. Especially since insurance companies will not cover it. We can use HSA and Flex Spending accounts, and provide a detailed receipt (superbill) for reimbursement. We have a small clinic in West Wash Park Denver. We try to keep our overhead low so we can keep our treatment costs low.

How Many Treatments do I Need?

Every case is unique and we always customize our treatments to each individual.  We have some basic guidelines that we use to help people know how many treatments they need, and what to expect.  It is unusual that we can treat a tendonitis or a tendonosis with just 1 treatment.  For most cases that are mild to moderate, 3 injections are  recommended.  This can strengthen the tendon and give years of relief.  Again, eliminate that cause and you will have a more successful Jumper’s Knee Treatment.  If it is more sever, like a full thickness tear, then we recommend a series of 5 injections, and we may need a 6th.  The injections happen 3- 4 weeks apart, and while we are doing the treatments, we need to stop the activity that is irritating the knee.  We are helping the area to heal, but if you continue to stress the knee while we are doing the treatments, we will not have as good results.  10 days to 2 weeks after our last injection we want to start incorporating the exercise again and should be seeing noticeable improvements.

We’re Athletes Too!

Are you tired of your doctor telling you that “Running is bad for your knees”, or “If you do Crossfit, you’ll injure yourself and get Rabdo!”? Here at Prolotherapy of Denver, we know what works because we’re athletes too. Whether you are training for your first 5K or have completed multiple Ironmans, whether you’re a weekend warrior or nationally ranked, we are here to help you meet those goals and smash your PRs.

Frequently Asked Questions

It is not a hoax.  Prolotherapy was standardized in the 1950’s and has undergone rigorous clinical trials investigating if it works and how it works.  Prolotherapy has been proven to be effective in many cases and is supported with scientific research.

No, unfortunately Prolotherapy is not covered by insurance. You can use an HSA or Flex Spending account though.

With any injection, there are risks.  The provider must be qualified and understand how prolotherapy works and the structures around what they are injecting.  That being said, the ingredients in a prolotherapy solution are safe and side effects are rare.

Absolutely!  One of the most common injuries I treat, and get the best results with, is SI Joint pain.  Prolotherapy helps to rejuvenate the SI joint and strengthen the ligaments that stabilize the low back and SI joint.  Prolotherapy in very effective in treating this, especially post-partum and other low back injuries.

Yes, prolotherapy has been proven to help with arthritis.  It can offer years of relief, but since arthritis is a degenerative condition, you will want to incorporate proper movement exercises to help to slow the progress of the arthritis.  Proper nutrition will also be key.

Prolotherapy has been proven to help with knee pain.  Many studies tracked results for 2 – 2.5 years still demonstrating relief from their treatments.

Most cases require 3 injections about 2-3 weeks apart.  After about 10 days following the third injection, we want the patient to start increasing activity and see how the area feels and assess the healing.  For more severe cases like bone on bone arthritis or full thickness tears of tendons or ligaments, up to 6 injections, 2-3 weeks apart are needed. Each treatment takes 30 – 45 minutes.

Prolotherapy injects a concentrated dextrose solution in to an injured part of the body to help it heal faster.  The nature of the solution results in a dull ache for 48 to 72 hours.  You will not be sedated, and you will be able to perform light to moderate activity.  You can use a warm compress if needed, but most people find the discomfort tolerable.

Prolotherapy uses a hypertonic dextrose solution injected in to an injury site to stimulate the body to heal a specific area. PRP take the patient’s blood, spins it through a centrifuge, and then takes the white blood cells and platelets and injects them in to an injury.  Both fall in the category of regenerative injections.
